Abstract

Abstract. The purpose of the article is to provide a structural-functional combination of two historical phenomena: “barrier
detachments” (zagradotryads) and their role in ensuring the export of Ukrainian grain.
The scientific novelty is due to the author’s scientific and historical interpretation of grain exports, rethinking the
traditional attitude towards Ukraine as the «granary of Russia» and Europe, and the perception of it as a raw material
appendage of the empire. The interaction of the «general» (the grain economy of Ukraine and its grain exports) and the
«special» (the presence of signs of the «colonial heritage» of the Russian Empire under the conditions of the Soviet totalitarian
regime) looks innovative.
The methodology is determined by the formulation of the problem, therefore the structural-functional approach is key,
and the methods of historical research accompany it.
Conclusions. Scientific and political discussions in the 1920s about the presence of signs of a “colonial legacy” and
“colonial remnants” in Ukraine had administrative and economic grounds. Neocolonial practices took place in the relations
between the union and republican institutions, and the policy of war communism with its forms and methods (food appropriation,
violence, barricading detachments, revolutionary tribunals, etc.) testified to the functioning of the occupation Bolshevik regime
in Ukraine. Grain exports with complete disregard for the grain-forage balance in agriculture are additional evidence of the
colonial exploitation of Ukrainian farmers.
